Accreditation

Hawaii Tokai International College is an American college that is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (10 Commercial Boulevard, Suite 204, Novato, California 94949, telephone 415-506-0234), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. At the discretion of the receiving school, HTIC students may transfer credits to or from other accredited American colleges and universities.

Academic Programs:

The two primary academic programs at Hawaii Tokai International College are the Junior College Liberal Arts Program (A.A. Degree), which is commonly referred to as HTIC’s Liberal Arts Program, and the College Preparatory Program, which is designed to teach content-based English language skills to international students from non-English speaking backgrounds. The Educational Mission of HTIC comes to life within its academic programs where the potential of each student is supported, the mind challenged, and the intellect engaged. Learning at HTIC takes place in many forms both within and outside the classroom. An HTIC student is always in a process of exploration – discovering knowledge, skills, and self within a supportive “learning community.”

Placement in the Academic Program

The academic program at HTIC is designed to meet the varying needs of international students based upon their language proficiency. Upon admittance to HTIC, international students undergo an English language evaluation process that involves a variety of measurements, including a language test, interview, oral presentation, and essay. Based upon this assessment process, international students will enter either as Unclassified or Classified Junior College Liberal Arts students.

Unclassified students enter one of the five levels of the College Preparatory Program at the level compatible with their abilities. Classified students are admitted directly into the College Liberal Arts Program. In certain instances, classified students may be advised to strengthen their skills by taking the foundations level English 22 course.

Students who have successfully graduated from an American high school or have completed a full term of study courses 100 level or above at an accredited American institution of higher education (9 credits quarter system or 12 credits semester system minimum), may enter HTIC as Classified Liberal Arts Students.

Associate in Arts Degree Program (Liberal Arts Program)

HTIC is an accredited liberal arts college offering an Associate in Arts degree. Based upon the concept of the “learning community,” the Liberal Arts Program emphasizes active learning techniques, critical thinking, cross-cultural understanding, and integrated learning in a highly supportive setting. The ratio of students to faculty in the classroom is kept small to maximize the opportunity for excellence in teaching and for optimum learning.

College Preparatory Program for International Students

Students who enter HTIC with limited English proficiency are enrolled in the College Preparatory Program (College Prep) for international students. This five-level, integrated learning program emphasizes the exercise of English as a Second Language (ESL) while studying liberal arts subject matter in a challenging, “hands-on” setting. Students who successfully complete the skills outcome-based College Prep Program are admitted to the Liberal Arts Program.

Faculty and Staff

As a liberal arts college with an emphasis on teaching, HTIC values professional educators who embrace the College’s Educational Mission. Faculty members hold advanced degrees from accredited American universities. Most have taught at other higher educational institutions and have considerable international experience. Faculty are recruited and supported at HTIC based upon their teaching effectiveness and enthusiasm to contribute to the “learning community.” A listing of faculty and staff can be viewed in the “Faculty-Staff Section” of this website.
