FAQ | "Discover Japan Program" at Tokai UniversityHTIC is unique among junior colleges for offering an Associate of Arts degree that incorporates study abroad in Japan. Study abroad is the first step to "global citizenship" and can be challenging, stimulating, and enriching. It forces participants to learn as much about themselves as about the foreign language and culture.
In addition, students who study overseas are highly sought after by prospective graduate degree programs and employers, especially multinational companies that prefer geographically mobile individuals who have demonstrated a willingness to adapt to a foreign environment.
Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC) and Tokai University (Shonan Campus) in Japan are both part of the Tokai University Educational System of Japan (TES). TES is an extensive network of educational and research institutions throughout Japan, with facilities also located in Denmark and Austria.
HTIC reflects the combined educational philosophies of TES founder, Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, and Dr. Richard Kosaki, University of Hawaii Chancellor Emeritus, former professor and founder of the UH Community College System. Both men shared a strong belief in active learning through which students not only acquire knowledge, but also develop critical thinking, communication skills, and the intellectual curiosity to be lifelong learners.
All course requirements may be met at HTIC by taking courses offered during the Fall and Winter terms. Those who enroll in HTIC in the Fall take the "Freshman Experience" along with other incoming freshmen, but if they have no Japanese language background, they also enroll in JPN 101 (Fall term). Then, during the next term (Winter term), students must take JPN 102, HIST 251 (History of Japan) and at least ONE other Japan-related course such as ANTH 202 (Japanese Culture), politics of Japan, or Japanese Literature. After completion of these courses, students become eligible to participate in the intensive program held in Japan on the Tokai University Shonan Campus from April 1 to July 31 (the equivalent of the Spring and first Summer Session Terms at HTIC).
For those students who do not enter the College in the Fall, alternative arrangements may be made with regards to when the prerequisite courses may be taken.

These nine credits are added to the 6 or more Japan-related credits already earned at HTIC (e.g., HIST 251, ANTH 202, POLI SCI 222) for a total of 15 credits that apply towards graduation from the Associate in Arts degree program.
The "Discover Japan: Japanese Language and Cultural Immersion Program" is open to all HTIC students, current and future, who are non-native speakers of Japanese. The first step is to enroll in HTIC as a freshman in the Associate of Arts degree (Liberal Arts) program.
It is also possible for students of other junior or four-year colleges to participate in this exchange; however, an exchange arrangement must first be established between HTIC and the college(s) in question.
For students to attend the one-term intensive Tokai University program from April 1 to July 31 (the equivalent of the Spring and first Summer Session Terms at HTIC), applications must be submitted by December 31 of the prior year.
